Can You Ride With a Cracked Mountain Bike rim?-Here’s what you need to know

there are different kinds of bike crack rims

  • cracks near the spokes because the spokes have pinched inward due to the high pressure of the rotating wheel.
  • Cracks near the spoke nipples have created holes within the rim.
  • crack on the sidewall of the wheel on the rim.

You can ride with a 2mm to 3mm rim crack but in one situation if it is not spread further on the trails. you have to be aware that on the trails otherwise the tire will become flat and your bike will distract from its way and a crash happens.

Always check rims, spokes mounting places, and sidewalls of rims thoroughly before going on a ride or after coming from a ride because it is usually a small point to notice which creates more danger and risk on the trails.

A small crack on the rim does not matter on the trails and you can ride with any psi pressure and any rough terrains without any risk as far as it is going deep and making a big hole on the rim.

The aluminum rim cracks are dangerous for the wheel because the aluminum rim does make any irritating sound of cracking and breaking on the trails and it starts spreading, you would not even know about the crack but carbon rims make a sound of click before cracking and warns you about the rim crack.

Avoid riding with a cracked rim wheel because due to jumps and drops on aggressive trails, a small crack changes into a moderate and big which is dangerous and alarming for rough terrains.

After riding 10 to 15 miles inspect the crack of the rim if it is increasing then do not ride further on this rim.

Cracked rims can also be changed and these are replaced with the new rims but your wheel remains the same if these are working better.

Sometimes the rim beads become cracked due to which cracking place slightly bend and deform and loses all the grip of tire seating on the bead, in such cases there is a disadvantage you cannot run the tire with higher psi pressures, chances of the bursting of tire are present that why it would be better to true the crack by an experienced wheel builder also rim beak crack does not tolerate the heavy load of the rider and stuff.

If you are riding a cheap rim under 50$, then it would be a good step to change it with a new one because the mechanic also wants 30 to 40 bucks for truing rim crack.

A cracked rim rubs with the rim brakes and causes damage, in emergency conditions on the trails if your rim got cracked then mount the brakes 2mm to 3mm far from the rim to avoid the brakes and pads.

When rims get older these will start piercing near the spokes, and air leakage starts slowly which causes the risk of bursting wheel tires on the trails.

Rim crack is usually small and sometimes on hidden places of the rim, you will inspect the rim, and you start thinking that it is just a scratch on the rim but this scratch starts going deeper and becomes a crack.

Follow moderate trails with commuting speed if the rim is cracked, it is the way you can save yourself from serious injury.

Cracked aluminum rims do not cause a sudden failure of the wheel as compared to the carbon wheel, it just stops the rotation of the wheel and digs within the ground but carbon wheels cause serious issues to your body if you don’t know about them the cracked rim.

Cracked rim with tube tires:

tubes tires will help you a lot if the rim got cracked on the trails, which is that these can hold air pressure within the tube and do not cause any air leakage from the tire, the crack remains on the rim and the bike tire remains inflated fully, you will reach safely in your home or any mechanic shop.

If you want to carry your ride with the existing rim crack then increase the air pressure of the tube so that the tire becomes fully inflated due to which the width of the tire increase and covers the sidewall crack of the wheel, while riding on aggressive terrains the tire should make contact with the trail ground and the crack part remains hidden from further cracking or spreading.

Sometimes the crack is so small or hidden o simply a hole that it causes confusion and it is hard for a rider to differentiate between the crack, dent, scratch, o simple paint scratch, then you can remove the tire from the wheel and examine fully about the crack after that mount the tire into the rim.

Fixing of rim crack:

As you know metal would melt easily if you can heat it for a small time as far as it melts completely, then it becomes soft and easily change its direction and shape and becomes smooth and normal. you can change the direction of the crack with a wrench or any tool by applying a small force then if you have a welding machine you can weld the crack and fill the space/hole thoroughly by welding, it can easily be done by mechanics and steel welding stores.

Now the crack is filled and the rim is prepared to mount onto the wheel but before mounting find paint of the same color so that it can match the rim color, and apply it to the cracking place, this is the method of repairing the cracked rim by DIY method or by mechanics.

If the rim is old and you are using it for years then sometimes it will break during the fixing, but it mostly takes place when the rim wheel is cheaper and has low brand quality.

If you are well developed for fixing cracked rims then it would be good to do it yourself but it is not easy it requires tools and experience in welding if you feel it’s complicated then never do it by yourself and go for a welder or mechanic.

If a single spoke is damaged or broken within the rim, then it is fine you can ride with this rim for a kind of trail but if more than one spokes have tension issue or bent/deform then avoid riding with the same rim wheel and also never lift heavy heavy weights if a single spoke is missing or broken.

How To Fix A Flat Spot On A Bike Rim?

You can clearly identify a flat spot in a single wheel rotation because the rim loses its smoothness and the rider will feel a bump on every rotation of the wheel, the flat spot hits and rubs with the brakes, and if the spot is bigger more than 5mm it will start rubbing with frame tube of your bike, in the end, the tubeless tire will burst.

Fixing a flat spot needs a wood hammer, applying it with a force on the spot and the flat spot will become smooth.

Wheel stick tool is used for fixing spot on bike rim, it function is easy but need to be understood well and good, one end of this tool needs to be fixed within the center of the rim and touch the upper end with the flat spot of the rim, wheel stick is long enough to make contact with up and down surfaces of the rim.

You can also need wheel building machine in which you can place the rim and rotate it.

Bottle jack method for removing flat spots of bike rim:

This is an easy and DIY method, you don’t need wheel building machine and the other wheel-building tools if you spend bucks on this setup.

There are things which you need for this method:

  • Bottle jack
  • Small piece of rubber 2cm in length
  • A small wood spacer of 3 to cm in length
  • A line Marker
  • 1 feet scale
  • Spoke Key

Now firstly you can mark the place of the flat spot on the rim with a line marker and circle the spot, measure the distance between the axle or center of the rim and the spoke nipples/rim bead and follow the same distance for the bottle jack when you insert within the center of the rim.

Remove 4 to 5 spokes on the left and right side of the flat spot after that now you got an empty space within the rim, insert the bottle jack within this space with the lower end on the hub region and the upper end with the contact surface of the flat spot. place the rubber in between the upper end of the bottle jack and the flat spot and the wood spacer under the bottle jack and above the hub and axle for preventing dents or forcefully pulling coming down from the bottle jack.

The bottle jack contains a long handle, apply force on the handle and the bottle jack starts creating pressure and pushes a force in the upward direction toward the flat spot.

Never apply more pressure on the flat spot otherwise this pressure will cause any damage to your wheel, spokes, and the rim.

Apply a recommended pre3ssure with the bottle on the flat spot and when you notice it’s over and the flat is covered then stop pumping the bottle jack and remove the jack and inspect the spot, if it still needs some more pressure or force then do it again with the bottle jack, this is an easy and worthy process for flat spots on bike rims.
